Species belonging to the Aerococcus genus are isolated from the urine and blood of elderly patients suffering from urinary tract infections (UTIs). However, the clinical significance, phenotypic features and antimicrobial susceptibilities of these underestimated and/or misidentified species remain unclear.

We conclude that Aerococcus urinae’s antimicrobial susceptibility for penicillin and cefurox-ime have a strong positive correlation using disk diffusion method. Based on the results we draw to the conclusion that breakpoints for penicillin established by EUCAST could be used to interpret susceptibility to cefuroxime and ceftriaxone.

Christensen * Aerococcus urinae appartient au genre Aerococcus qui comprend à l'heure actuelle 8 espèces : 5 espèces isolées chez l'homme: Aerococcus viridans, espèce type, décrit en 1953, A.urinae (1992), A. christensenii (1999), A. sanguinicola (2001), A. urinaehominis (2001) et 3 espèces isolées chez Aerococcus sanguinicola is a member of the bacterial genus Aerococcus and is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative coccus growing in clusters. This species was defined in 2001 and has since then been increasingly recognized as a pathogen causing urinary tract infections and also invasive infections including infective endocarditis. Based on the results we draw to the conclusion that breakpoints for penicillin established by EUCAST could be used to interpret susceptibility to cefuroxime and ceftriaxone. A. sanguinicola are catalase-negative, vancomycin-susceptible, gram-positive cocci arranged in clusters and tetrads, as are all Aerococcus species except A. christensenii (which is arranged in short chains). Aerococci urinae is a Gram-positive, catalase-negative, bacterium that grows in clusters, often appearing in colonies that resemble Streptococci viridans [ 1 ]. Its genus was first described in 1953, with the first reported case of A. urinae in a human described in 1992 [ 1, 2 ].

Fluoroquinolones, co-trimoxazole, and fosfomycin exhibited a variable activity. Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola are newcomers to clinical and microbiological practice. The first report on A. urinae was published in 1989 (14) and the name designated in 1992 and A.sanguinicola was named in 2001 . A retrospective chart review was performed on 92 patients from whom 118 isolates of Aerococcus sanguinicola (n = 52) or Aerococcus urinae (n = 66) were obtained from urine cultures between October 2007 and June 2008 to assess clinical presentation and antimicrobial susceptibilities.

Aerococcus urinae may cause urinary tract infections, bacteremia, and endocarditis. No standardized susceptibility test methods or interpretive criteria have been proposed for this organism. This In 2001 the clinically relevant species Aerococcus sanguicola [22], which was later renamed A. sanguinicola, was defined.

Aerococcus sanguinicola susceptibility

Aerococcus sanguinicola susceptibility

In the present study, penicillin susceptibilities were in agreement with these findings. Aerococcus urinae may cause urinary tract infections, bacteremia, and endocarditis.
