The World Map and Goethe‟s Weltliteratur 139 Notes 1 The first usage was apparently by Wieland sometime between 1790 and 1813 (Weitz 1987:206ff.). 2 See John Pizer‟s useful discussion (Pizer 2000:213-227). 3 Bohnenkamp cites Thomas Mann (1994:336). 4 This is the argument of Michael Jaeger (2004) 5 The citation is from a comment Goethe made to the Polish writer and translator Anton Eduard
Weltliteratur, in this case, begins not with that January evening, but with the appendix. Fritz Strich concluded his seminal study Goethe und die Weltliteratur (1946) with an appendix of the twenty passages from Goethe’s oeuvre in which the term Weltliteratur appeared.2 In its chronological span from January 15, 1827 to April 24, 1831, Strich’s

Goethes sämtliche Werke : Goethe - Internet Goethe and Weltliteratur 3 8 (1827 Oct. 12) In a letter to Sulpiz Boisserée, Goethe writes: "In this connection it might be added that what I call world literature develops in the first place when the differences that prevail within one nation are resolved through the understanding and judgment of the rest" (quoted in Strich 1949: 349). The concept of World Literature is usually traced back to Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s neologism Weltliteratur, most notably in a diary entry in January 31, 1827, as well as in scattered references elsewhere. World Literature inevitably inherits some of the occidento-centrism of its founding figure. By examining Goethe’s various statements concerning Weltliteratur, as well as by contrasting them with his attempts to develop a method of comparative literary analysis in his Noten to the West-östlicher Divan, it is argued that Goethe’s ideas about Weltliteratur and about literary comparison raise important issues which are still live in the discipline today.
